Covering Up Your Tracks

You must have come across a wrapping material usually on CDs and DVDs that is mainly composed of polyolefin or PVC and can be bought easily from the market.  This is called a “shrink wrap”.  It works by shrinking and wrapping itself tightly around the package upon heating.  It is used in all kinds of packaging besides CDs and DVDs such as:

1.    soda cans,

2.    books,

3.    cartons,

4.    gift baskets,

5.    documents, and so on. 

It is also used for covering and storing some food items such as meats and vegetables.  Electric wiring and even boats may be covered and preserved with shrink wrap.  Shrink wrap is a viable option for combining packages. 

This multi-purpose and versatile packaging material follows an easy wrapping method which remains the same.  It does not depend on the size of the package that requires wrapping.  All that needs to be done is to measure out the film, cover the package with it and then apply heat so the film would cling to the object. 

To wrap small packages at home you can easily purchase the shrink wrap film from any store near you.  All you have to do is measure it according to the size of the package, wrap it around it, and then apply heat to it with the help of a hair drying machine hence making it cling securely. 

To wrap bigger objects this do-it-yourself method is not good enough.  For packages of a bigger size you will have to purchase shrink wrap machines from your local market. 

In the earlier days shrink wrap machines were only available at factories and depots but this is not the case any more.  Smaller, more cheaper alternatives are now available that have replaced the heavy and complex counterparts. 

You can find two different kinds of shrink wrap machines in the market which are not only easy to use but are also quite cheap.  These are;

1.    I-bar shrink wrap sealers, and

2.    L-bar shrink wrap sealers.

If the package or item to be sealed is of a small or a medium volume then the best option would be to go for an I-bar shrink wrap sealer.  A solitary bar is used by this machine to seal the film.  This bar is lowered onto the film and a required surface area is cut which is then made to stick to the package with the help of a heat gun. 

In cases where the package or item to be sealed is of a higher volume L-bar shrink wrapper is used.  Most large businesses use this kind of machine for shrink wrapping.  It's called L-bar because the bar that is used for cutting the film is in the shape of the letter “L”.  It uses a heat tunnel for sealing the wrap.
