Black Angel
BY DINFIN MULUPI EJAKAIT "BLACK ANGEL" Mary held her breath her eyes fixed on the M.C, it was the night she has waited for, for a long time. She clearly understood what it meant to her. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Mary Ekaal a young Turkana girl determined to make the best out of life joined the city's teachers college with the dream of becoming a teacher and yes, earn a salary every month. With all the hurdles of being a pastoralist, constant attacks from neighboring communities and old fashioned traditions regarded so sacred, being a teacher would surely make her the pride of her home village if not fetch her father dozens of goats for bride price. But that was before she joined the writing club having grown up in a tiny village in Lokitaung District south of Kenya , Mary had little fascination about reading or writing. After all the leading National dailies made it to Lokitaung two or three days after publication – if at all robbers did not attack the transporting lorry. She stumbled to the writing club after one of her friends invitation and ended up being a story teller more than a writer. The other students found her life experiences rather amusing and amazing. Traveling escapades looking for grass , archaic beliefs regarded so sacred, constant wars ,drought, famine and dynamic culture hers was a totally different world. In the writing club she found friends a second home and most of all a new love - love for the pen. Mary spent hours and hours writing about her life in Lokitaung and the big contrast in the city. She penned down poems in praise of Turkana women their had work endurance discrimination and determination to bring up their children as their husbands lay in ‘Ekicholongs" watching their daughters grow and waiting for dowry. When the writing club coach Mr Oliech, asked the students to submit their articles for the monthly publication, Mary had enough articles to fill the entire magazines Mr. Oliech read all the articles by all students but found Mary's article's rather unique either she was very creative, or copying from somewhere. To confirm that he summoned her to his office "I see you have been making good use of the internet? Huh down loading everything "Mary looked in disbelief, internet? There isn't even one television channel in Lokitaung leave alone internet. A little chitchat and Mr. Oliech was on the phone to call Mr. Fitzgerald. The next day saw them at Mr. Fitzgerald's office [ a man probably in his sixteen with short cropped hair and a long nose]. He swang in his chair reading the articles one by one , each took him to a new world and from the expression on his face it was a world he loved. Mr Fitzgerald looked up his blue eyes full of life, a smile played on his lips, he picked up the phone, well Mary just didn't know what was happening. Mr Fitzgerald is the founder and managing director of Black publishing company and well he had just approved the publication of Mary's poems. The next few months saw Mary writing and reading yes, "if you Wanna be a great writer you gotta be a great reader " was one of the ten pillars of great writers according to Mr. Fitzgerald . Research work ,soul searching, early mornings and late nights in front of the printer was the order of the day for Mary , everything had to be perfect. under the stewardship of Mr Fitzgerald Mary finally finished writing the collection of her poems but their had to be a sacrifice, standing in front of a classroom chalk in one hand and stick on the other was now a distance dream never to achieved ,at least not in this lifetime. Inspirational, mind boggling, full of information, all the big words was what literary critics, described the hardcopy of the poetry collection titled "Black angels". Paying tribute to pastoralist, the geographically alienated ,married to poverty, arrested by traditions and blinded by love for animals. Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx The place was New York, world trading center to be precise. The M.C holding a microphone announced "The winner of the 2008 international poetry grand award is "Black Angles" by Mary Ek----------------- he stammered Mary Ekaal from Kenya. Anyone could have sworn the M.C was more shocked than audience , the hall was quiet everyone looking around them out of the crowd, a black girl ,short haired dressed in goat skins and beads all round her neck walked to the podium " To all the black women who toil every day to make this world a different place. To all Kenyans------ and no----- if you thought we spent all day running a round with machetes killing each other now you know we also have some time to do some writing " she said .The crowd burst in applause clapping both in disbelief and admiration. With the one million dollar cheque in one hand and the golden statute on the other Mary looked in the distant and met the eyes of Mr. Fitzgerald same old fitzs. She could tell from his eyes he was very proud of her. ENDS….

Scott Fitzgerald $6.06 Revealing and unusual, Scott Fitzgerald follows the fascinating life of one of America's most enduring authors, from his early years in St. Paul and at Princeton to New York in the twenties, the French Riviera, Baltimore, and finally Hollywood. Andrew Turnbull tells the story behind F. Scott Fitzgerald's This Side of Paradise, revised and finally published when he was twenty-four, making him instantly famous, and his tender love affair with Zelda Sayre, from their glittering early life to the years Zelda spent in and out of sanatoriums. A literary generation, too, comes alive, including Ernest Hemingway, Edmund Wilson, the Murphys, and Edith Wharton. Fitzgerald lived on Turnbull's family estate in Baltimore in the early 1930s and there befriended young Andrew, then age eleven. Turnbull's personal relationship with Fitzgerald and the hundreds of interviews with those who knew him elegantly capture the dramatic, tragic story of F. Scott and the glow and pathos of his flamboyant life. |

The Fitzgerald Legacy $23.95 The Queensland Government Commission of Inquiry into Possible Illegal Activities and Associated Police Misconduct, commonly referred to as the Fitzgerald Inquiry, lasted for two years. Its findings and recommendations, tabled in Parliament in May 1989, continue to have a significant effect on many aspects of public life in Queensland and beyond. This edited collection recalls the events that led up to the Fitzgerald Inquiry and examines the extraordinary influence the ‘watershed' inquiry has had on police and public sector reform at the state, national and international levels. |

Fitzgerald's Mentors $23.95 Fitzgerald’s Mentors is a fresh and compelling study of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s intellectual friendship with Edmund Wilson, H. L. Mencken, and Gerald Murphy.   Fitzgerald was shaped through his engagements with key literary and artistic figures in the 1920s. This book is about their influence— and also about the ways that Fitzgerald defended his own ideas about writing. Influence was always secondary to independence.   Fitzgerald’s education began at Princeton with Edmund Wilson. There Wilson imparted to Fitzgerald many ideas about education and literary values, among them respect for the classics and an acute awareness of literary tradition.   In New York H. L. Mencken impressed upon Fitzgerald his belief in the stifling effect of public morality on writers. Furthermore, Mencken’s The American Language changed Fitzgerald’s thinking about the power of everyday language.   After moving to France in 1924, Fitzgerald’s intellectual life took a very different turn. Gerald Murphy exposed him to the visual arts— including the work of Fernand Leger, Pablo Picasso, and Man Ray—and to people deeply interested in the perception of art in daily life. Equally important, Fitzgerald had many discussions about artistic values with both Gerald and Sara Murphy.   |
