Do Man's Best Friends Own Us or Do We Own Them?
Dogs are some of the most popular pets in the world. They stare at their owners with those big eyes, sleep at your feet, welcome you when you arrive from work, wriggling madly as if you were a princess, and eagerly eat whatever wholesale dog food you choose to provide them, all the while zestfully protecting your home with loud barks and alert watchfulness. We seem to have figured out how to make dogs happy and under our control. Compare them to kitties. As royal as the kitty may be, it is constantly, 100% of the time, thinking up plans to {escape! Not so the dog.
Indeed, that is the story we have invented for our egos. But seriously, don’t you think pooches have conquered all of the fine points of the trade and successfully manipulate the human beings that they live with?
Pups have convinced us to take them in and conquer their wolf ancestry. We supply them with meat, protection from the cold, roommates, gratifying occupations, doggy dress when necessary, and super wholesale dog chew toys. They have even convinced us to spend unbelievable amounts of our money on washing, brushing, and trotting them around a show ring just so we can garner a blue ribbon and they can rake in worship and more food.
Possibly, you say, employed dogs don’t enjoy their jobs that much. But think about it. A fulfilling task is one of the most pleasant experiences in the world for person or beast, at least as long as we are all handled kindly. Mutts get to frolic around controlling cattle; race over the snow and ice in a leaping burst of excitement; gently guide a visually impaired person through a wholesale dog store (where Spot gets to chose his own rawhide chew). They get to ride on fire engines; work with police officers; serve in the military; and save us from bad actors by sniffing out drugs and weapons, all the while receiving worshipful glances from passersby. In short, they hold some of the most important positions anywhere. This is not labor; this is a celebrity! Isn’t Rin Tin Tin more recognizable than you are?!
True, in return, our faithful mutts give us constant devotion and make us want to live up to the extraordinary people they think we are and who deserve such greetings at the end of the day. They cock their heads and smile; they retrieve, they let you take them on walks (or, more accurately, they lead you) and they play with the kids. And the feel of that silky head as we say good night with a pat really cannot be replaced. If all they ask in return is a few treats or a nice soft bed from a wholesale dog store – and that they get to think they are the leader of the pack - surely we can ungrudgingly oblige
