Vince Lombardi
Nfl Entertainment With Its' Ups & Downs
You don't have to be a sports lover in order to love a good sports flick. There are many people out there who don't know much about sports but still include Field of Dreams, Miracle, Remember The Titans, and Hoosiers among their favorite movies of all time. A sports flick, when done right, can evoke strong emotion and a desire to go out and do the impossible. The hard part is to be able to create a movie on something that is unique and different. There have been so many movies made about the underdog beating the titans, that it almost doesn't even make you blink to watch it. A good sports movie needs to have unique characters, a true storyline, and something story plot that sets it apart from all of the other sports movies that are currently available on the market.
This is where the new biopic on Vince Lombardi comes in. ESPN announced plans to release a film about legendary Green Bay Packer's coach Vince Lombardi before the Superbowl in 2012. Lombardi is set to be played by Robert De Niro, and it will showcase his career and his intense rivalry with Dallas Cowboys coach Tom Landry. Anyone that knows NFL sports will tell you that Vince Lombardi is one of the most unique figures in Football history.
His coaching career was absolutely incredible. He became head coach of the Green bay Packers in 1959 and coached the team to win five World Championships in the space of nine years. With the amount of time he had to work with, this is an almost impossible feat to achieve. Not only did he have an incredible career that has since been looked on and envied by every other football coach, he also came up with some of the most famous sports quotes out there.
He coined the term "If it doesn't matter who wins or loses, then why do they keep score?", as well as "Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing." Known for his drive to win and be victorious, he made a name for himself in the NFL. Now that personality is being put to life onscreen and Eric Roth, who was the screenwriter for Forrest Gump, will attempt to bring Lombardi's words to life through Robert De Niro.
Having Robert De Niro in the lineup should make this a blockbuster of a movie. De Niro has done sports films in the past such as Raging Bull, which turned out to be one of the classic sports movies of all time.
One of the other things about this movie that will make it unique is the time period of the setting of the movie. The late fifties and early sixties were still a gangster era, and that should make for some fun plot twists and situational drama. Robert De Niro should be able to take this part in stride and help ESPN put out a great football movie that hopefully, if all goes well, will rank among some of the best sports movies of all time.

Why is the superbowl trophy named after Vince Lombardi?
He won the LAST NFL Championship and the First two "Superbowls"(I put it in quotes because they didn't have that name at the time). Only fitting that they be named for the only man to coach a team to THREE STRAIGHT NFL Championships.

Vince: A Personal Biography of Vince Lombardi $3.95 Published to widespread critical acclaim, "Vince has been called: "the definitive biography" of an American legend. With stunning revelations and anecdotes, Vince Lombardi's life is pieced together with painstaking care in research, detail, and historical accuracy. Based on more than two hundred interviews, including those who played with him and against him, from his early coaching days at St. Cecilia High School in New Jersey to West Point, the New York Giants, and his championship seasons with the Green Bay Packers and Washington Redskins. Drawing upon unpublished Lombardi family papers, "Vince clarifies the thirty years of mystery and contradiction that have swirled around the legend of Vince Lombardi. "Vince goes beyond the sidelines to reveal the true character of Lombardi. He was dedicated and narrow, intelligent and dogmatic, self-restrained yet emotional, abusive yet apologetic. His moods could swing from deep gloom to soaring exuberance in seconds. He was compassionate, kind, charitable. He could also be gripped by uncontrollable anger. Above all, "Vince paints a portrait of a very human man who committed his life to winning. |

When Pride Still Mattered: A Life of Vince Lombardi $3.95 More than any other sports figure, Vince Lombardi transformed football into a metaphor of the American experience. The son of an Italian immigrant butcher, Lombardi toiled for twenty frustrating years as a high school coach and then as an assistant at Fordham, West Point, and the New York Giants before his big break came at age forty-six with the chance to coach a struggling team in snowbound Wisconsin. His leadership of the Green Bay Packers to five world championships in nine seasons is the most storied period in NFL history. Lombardi became a living legend, a symbol to many of leadership, discipline, perseverance, and teamwork, and to others of an obsession with winning. In "When Pride Still Mattered, " Pulitzer Prize-winning author David Maraniss captures the myth and the man, football, God, and country in a thrilling biography destined to become an American classic. |

The Official Vince Lombardi Playbook: His Classic Plays & Strategies, Personal Photos & Mementos, Recollections from Friends & For $6.97 Vince Lombardi was notorious for his inability to throw anything away. What that means to fans of one of football's greatest figures finally comes together in "The Vince Lombardi Playbook"--an unprecedented collection of intimate photos; colorful reflections from players who honed their skills under Lombardi; personal mementos; and an array of his handwritten speeches, personal letters, scouting reports, and photos of players. Above all, "The Vince Lombardi Playbook" highlights the plays that made the Packers great: the feared power sweep, the halfback option pass, the textbook traps, the risky third-and-short passes, and many others. Featured in diagrams in Lombardi's original hand, with accompanying terminology and notations, these archival gems form an all-access pass onto the field and into the mind of a legend. Americans yearn for a more simple era, when athletes made news for their sporting accomplishments, not their arrests or congressional testimony. Most sports fans are equally nostalgic for the on-field simplicity of those days. Paying homage to a legend, "The Vince Lombardi Playbook" will be treasured by fans as an irresistible piece of history. |

Lombardi - An Illustrated Life $34.05 Vince Lombardi provided the quintessential American success story. The son of an immigrant Italian butcher, he rose to become the greatest coach in NFL history. His character and will to prevail transformed him, his family, his players, his sport and ultimately the entire country. Lombardi is also a vibrant football story, abundant with accounts of Lombardi's thrilling life in that world, from his playing days with the Seven Blocks of Granite at Fordham in the 1930s to the glory of coaching the Green Bay Packers of Starr, Hornung, Taylor, McGee, Davis, and Wood in the 1960s. As the NFL was emerging as ?the sport of choice on television? there was Lombardi's Packers as the dominant team shaping that evolving landscape. Vincent Thomas Lombardi was born in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, on June 11, 1913. His early life was shaped by the trinity of family, religion, and sports; they seemed intertwined, as inseparable to him as Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. He was deeply influenced by the Jesuits, who taught him the philosophy he later used with his players, subordinating individual desires to a larger cause. The geography of his rise was the opposite of the small-town boy who makes it in the big city. This son of New York did not achieve fame until he took a job in remote Green Bay, Wisconsin, the smallest city in the NFL. He was already forty-six when he was finally hired to coach the hapless Packers in 1959, leading them in the most storied period in NFL history, winning five world championships in nine seasons, including the first two Super Bowls. Just one week after his death September 3, 1970, the NFL renamed its Super Bowl trophy in his honor. Lombardi was enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1971. Lombardi has become a mythic character who transcends sport, and his legend has only grown in the decades since. Many now turn to Lombardi in search of characteristics that they fear have been irretrievably lost, the old-fashioned virtues of discipline, obedience, loyalty, character, and teamwork. |
