One Other
How can you associate two dogs when one is frightened of other dogs and always wants to fight?
I have a collie cross and a friend has a german shepard. My dog is really crap with other dogs, she is protective and snaps when confronted. My friends dog is very dosile but does like to play. We would like to be able to get them to get along as we want to dog swap for holidays and that sort of thing. We take them on long walks together but if one sniffs around the other it ends in a fight. Any thoughts really appreciated.
Your dog thinks it's top-dog in the pack.
It must learn that this is not teh case.
You must teach it that you are top-dog.
You don't need to hurt or abuse it to teach it this. Just use some assertive body language.
When he gets aggressive, simply pin him down on his back or side with your hand holding him down by his shoulder until he submits to your will.
This will calm him down in general.

The Other One $12.78 Dana Legg leads a popular big band that plays around greater Chicago, though this CD is likely to be an introduction to those who live outside the area. The veteran trombonist is a veteran jazz educator and performer, while the personnel in his band changes a bit over the course of the CD since the sessions were some five years apart. Starting with a peppy performance of the legendary arranger Lennie Niehaus' setting of "I'll Take Romance," the band plays with both gusto and nuance. Bandleader Gordon Goodwin contributed the invigorating chart of "Take the 'A' Train," which showcases guest tenor saxophonist Mark Colby. There are also terrific originals present, including Colby's swinging vehicle "Riley's Thang" and the leader's warm "Father Day," the latter featuring Bill Calkins' lush flügelhorn and effervescent trumpet solos, though a strangely out of place synthesizer sneaks into the picture in spots. This is one of many rewarding CDs issued by Sea Breeze that give greater national exposure to established regional musicians like the talented Dana Legg. ~ Ken Dryden, Rovi Performers: Mark Colby - Tenor (Vocal), Sax (Tenor); Mark Sorlie - Bass (Acoustic), Bass (Electric); Mark Tuttle - Tenor (Vocal), Flute, Sax (Soprano), Sax (Tenor); Bill Calkins - Flugelhorn, Trumpet; Bill Gilardon - Trombone; Bob Centano - Baritone (Vocal), Sax (Baritone); Bob Rummage - Drums; Brad Ard - Guitar; Colette Hazek - Vocals; |

The Other $4.99 John William Barry has inherited the pedigree - and wealth - of two of SeattleÂ’s elite families; Neil Countryman is blue-collar Irish. Nevertheless, when the two boys meet in 1972 at age sixteen, theyÂ’re brought together by what they have in common: a fierce intensity and a love of the outdoors that takes them, together and often, into WashingtonÂ’s remote backcountry, where they must rely on their wits - and each other - to survive. Soon after graduating from college, Neil sets out on a path that will lead him toward a life as a devoted schoolteacher and family man. But John William makes a radically different choice, dropping out of college and moving deep into the woods, convinced that it is the only way to live without hypocrisy. When John William enlists Neil to help him disappear completely, Neil finds himself drawn into a web of secrets and often agonizing responsibility, deceit, and tragedy - one that will finally break open with a wholly unexpected, life-altering revelation. |

In One Era out the Other $7.18 The Movies are one of the new wave of new wave revivalists. They stake out a claim to the softer sound of the era. Unlike a band like Interpol, who is mostly doom and gloom, or the Strokes, who are revved-up rockers, the Movies mostly stroll through the autumnal shadows humming a simple tune. The ten tracks on In One Era and out the Other are short, angular, and mostly mid-tempo, with stabbing keyboards and upfront basslines. The lyrics don't make much sense for the most part, but are suitably gloomy and weird. On the few up-tempo tracks, like "Don't Steal My Licks," vocalist Timothy James is a dead ringer for a caffeined-up Ric Ocasek as he jitters and yowls through the up-tempo tracks. When the band slows it down a little, James relaxes his vocal pose a little and the band is much more pleasant to listen to. "Secretariat" is even pretty in a Pavement-esque way, and "Pass the Music" is calm and jangly sounding, like an outtake from the Cars' Panorama. "A Better Life" features some fine keyboard work by Brian Cleary; he helps to fill out the rather thin sound of the guitar-bass-drums lineup throughout the record. The Movies overall sound pretty derivative but shows flashes of promise here and there. If you are a new wave of new wave revivalist who is out to collect all the new records you can, don't hesitate to pick this record up. ~ Tim Sendra, Rovi Performers: Brian Cleary - Keyboards; Jessica Cove Gelt - Maracas, Vocals (Background), Bass; Stevie Treichel - Drums |

One $8.78 Cursed's debut album (fittingly entitled One) is a conglomeration of short blasts of metallic fury and longer dirgelike numbers. Although the latter show a Neurosis influence, the larger influence would seem to be Integrity, while simultaneously reminiscent of the dirty, barreling-forward metallic hardcore from such scenes as Boston and upstate New York. The 11 songs speak out about blind patriotism, Christianity, relationships, and the other typical content one might expect from a hardcore album. The album surely gets its point across. ~ Kurt Morris, Rovi |

The Ugly One with the Jewels and Other Stories $13.59 On her later albums, Laurie Anderson had moved from her earlier spoken word-plus-effects style to a more overtly musical approach, with less effective results. The Ugly One With the Jewels, a recording of a live performance of readings from her book Stories From the Nerve Bible, returned her to speaking instead of singing, and it was her best album since Big Science. The 18 stories reflected Anderson's extensive travels, including forays into the Third World and to convents, although she made Los Angeles and Houston sound just as exotic. In fact, telling her stories over sounds from birds, guitars, and electronic beeps, she seemed an anthropologist from another world, always finding the natives friendly but strange. And she didn't fail to recognize that she could appear just as odd to them: "The Ugly One With the Jewels" was a name used by one of her subjects to describe her. ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi Performers: Cyro Baptista - Surdo, Gong; Greg Cohen - Keyboards, Guitar, Bass; Joey Baron - Drums; Laurie Anderson - Keyboards, Vocals, Violin |

Is the One $11.18 People do lovely things sometimes, and this record is ever the unexpected treasure. Bob Wagner and Jason Willett deflect and surprise and choke and sputter with tacit purpose and fulsome absurdity. The Can Openers are pop yet inaccessible, catchy yet nihilistic, flashy yet naked. They use their antennae and various other instruments (from guitar, drums and voice to trumpet to packing tape) to locate stinging insects and beautiful poisonous flowers. Their tentacles strum out shrill psychedelic jazz as well as chaotic pop songs. There is a `No Wave' spirit as well as a "No Genre" spirit present in their music that taps deep into the human nervous system. |

The One $9.58 Shinichi Osawa's first proper full-length under his own name is a masterful electro trip brimming with wild dance beats, loads of distorted techno and sampler sounds, and wisely chosen vocalists and co-producers. Far more bass-heavy and dancefloor-oriented than his mellower Mondo Grosso work, The One will thrill the cult fans who adore his contributions to the Lumines game series. Opener "Star Guitar" is an emotionally brittle cover of the Chemical Brothers original, with pretty shoegazer voices courtesy of the Au Revoir Simone trio layered into six minutes of propulsive, yearning electronic clatter and release. On most other albums, it would be the highlight, but all 14 tracks here (except perhaps the intermission-like "The Patch") are stunners. Osawa displays influences from acid house to Detroit techno to Basement Jaxx-like dance-pop to New Order-style sequencer workouts, all the while crafting his own warped style of crispy, burnt beats and notes. "Detonator," "Dreamhunt," and "Push" are all in the Basement Jaxx vein of confident, edgy female vocals over sexy beats, but there's some intangible quality to Osawa's delivery that makes for less cheesiness and a greater sense of cool. Working with Princess Superstar, Rubies, and Ania, respectively, on those tracks, he mans the boards seemingly with ease, tweaking all the right knobs to make all three songs cohesive and suggestive, yet varied in nuance. Akihiro Namba's surprisingly touching vocals on "Our Song" recall Gruff Rhys of Super Furry Animals, and Osawa and the Ultra Brain leading man work together to make the song an exuberantly jubilant dance anthem. As adept as Osawa is behind the soundboard, he's just as good at picking collaborators. In addition to the vocalists above and Yoshito Tanaka's guitars, he gets fine production help from Alexander Technique, Tim & Vass, Anu Pillai, and the brothers Ryukyudisko. The Lumines crowd might especially appreciate the instrumental "Last Days" and the similarly constructed "Foals," which adds alternately pensive and mad 1980s-style vocals from Nelson (not that goofy soft metal act). These tracks feel like sister productions to Osawa's Lumines 2 song "Stroll Around the World," an over the top electro screamfest collaboration with Thee Michelle Gun Elephant's Chiba Yusuke under the moniker Star Casino. "State of Permission," co-produced with Anu Pillai, is perhaps the album's most traditional concoction and an organic heartbeat of a song with Tamara Barnett-Herrin's pretty voice riding chilling basslines reminiscent of Martin Hannett. On a handful of solo pieces, Osawa lets out all the stops, crafting magic carpet rides of lush keyboards, semi-squelched samplers, and vintage techno effects. The One is a varied yet cohesive masterpiece and a sensory overload of dynamics, emotion, style, and outright joy that in a perfect musical and economic climate would instantly position Shinichi Osawa at the top of the dance and electronic genres. ~ Tim DiGravina, R |
