What is the significance of the second top button on military jackets being black in the First World War?

I have two photographs of World War One soldiers. One photo shows an infantryman from the 9th Battalion (The Royal Scots) and the second photo shows an infantryman from The Royal West Kent regiment. Both taken in 1914. Both infantrymen have a black button as the second button on their tunics. The first, third and fourth buttons are all brass. One soldier is a sergeant the other a private. What is the significance of the black button and why is it the second button down?

Good pick up.

It was because it was hard to keep the brass buttons shiny and in good condition. If you look at WW I uniforms, they wore a sash, holster support belt or belt of bullets across their chest at an angle from one shoulder to the opposite waist. (see reference)

This most often crossed the chest at the level of the second button. It either caused corrosion of the brass or wore the brass layer off the button, exposing the cheaper metal under neath.

If they wore the diagonal item, you did not see the button. If they took off the diagonal item, you did see the button and it looked different from the others. It was not intentional, it just happened.
