Looking for Injury Attorneys? Cleveland has Plenty
If you have recently sustained an injury you should probably consider looking for personal injury attorneys. Cleveland, Ohio has many personal injury lawyers to choose from. But what if you belong to the group of people who believe that America is becoming over-litigious? There are quite a number of these people out there and, sadly, when these people sustain an injury they may fail to be compensated in a fair manner because they are reluctant to litigate their case. There may be some validity to the point that people are becoming too hasty to litigate, but the truth of the matter is that there remains a proper time to bring a case to court.
If you have sustained an injury and the fault is not your own, then it may be one of those times where litigation is in order. Handling a personal injury case on your own without the assistance of a personal injury attorney is rarely as effective as it is with the help of qualified legal counsel. Here is why: If you are injured and the other party is to blame, it is most likely that the individual will not compensate you personally. Rather, his or her insurance policy will handle the compensation. This means that you will not be going after an individual, but an insurance company that is trained in the craft of paying as little as possible.
If insurance companies had it their way they would never pay on policies. To get as close to this end as possible, insurance companies have swarms of attorneys trained in finding ways to reduce blame to their insured and pay as little as possible in the way of compensation. This means that if you want to level the playing field it is necessary that you have a personal injury attorney on your side.

I have one week to decide!!!!! R32, GTI, or Tiguan????
Details: R32 = AMAZING, V6, 4WD, 33,000 $
GTI = V4, FrontWD, 26,000$ (with options I'd want)
Tiguan = Small SUV, V4 (Gtis engine), AWD, 29,000$
My Details: Im 18 years old, my father will cosign with me to make insurance a little cheaper.. I live in Cleveland, Ohio. During the winter the roads get pretty bad so a AWD or 4WD car will do a lot better than the GTI.. Id prefer the R32 over the GTI and Tiguan. Id prefer the GTI over the Tiguan. The Tiguan just came out so it would be very rare on the roads. I would still like a sporty car though.
as you can see i need help. please.. ??
R32 overated. I've driven it. Its bare and it's overpriced. Fast? So-so. Driven a G37 lately? THAT is faster, same for G35x if you need AWD.
GTI not a good choice for snowy weather.
Tiguan is brand new. Meaning, you wanna pay them to Beta test their product for them? I wouldn't.
There are better choices, how about a A4 Quattro? Lexus IS250 has an AWD model too. Same for the 3-series. They are all around the 30-35 range you seem to be looking. Evo is also within your range, altho insuring an 18 year old would kill your wallet. Subaru WRX STi is another recommendation if you want hatchbacks with AWD. There's a bunch out there, don't limit yourself to VWs.

Cleveland Heights $21.38 During its more than a century as a Cleveland suburb, Cleveland Heights has been shaped by the natural topography, technology, enterprising developers, elected officials, and its residents of many backgrounds. The result has been a rich mosaic of places and people. In the 1890s, wealthy Clevelanders began to leave the city's smoky factories and congested neighborhoods for the "heights" in East Cleveland Township. In 1901, the heights became the hamlet of Cleveland Heights. As its population changed, so did the suburb's homes, shops, schools, parks, and places of worship. Today, Cleveland Heights is as diversified as its citizens, its eclectic architecture and neighborhoods, and its unique history. |

Cleveland Police $17.67 When Cleveland, Ohio, was incorporated as a city on March 5, 1836, the population numbered less than 6,000. In its heyday, the city was touted as the "Sixth City" when the population soared to 560,663. Today, the Cleveland Division of Police serves and protects 478,403 souls. Over the years, the division has been a pioneer in many aspects of policing, including criminal identification, scientific investigation, and communications. In the 1920s and 1930s, Cleveland had one of the most progressive and efficient departments in the country. The first use of a surveillance camera to identify bank robbers, which led to their quick arrest, occurred in Cleveland on April 12, 1957. However, the job of protecting and serving the people has never been easy -- to date, 107 Cleveland police officers have died in the line of duty. |

Cleveland:: 1796-1929 $21.59 Located on the southern shores of Lake Erie, Cleveland was founded in 1796 by General Moses Cleaveland, an agent of the Connecticut Land Company surveying the Western Reserve. The modest frontier settlement became a village in 1815 and an incorporated city in 1836. By 1896, Cleveland boasted the Cuyahoga Building, the Soldiers and Sailors Monument, the Arcade, and the stately mansions of Euclid Avenue. Also known as "Millionaire's Row," it was home to Cleveland's industrial, commercial, cultural, and political elite, including Tom L. Johnson, a streetcar magnate and arguably Cleveland's finest mayor, and John D. Rockefeller, the founder of the Standard Oil Company and the nation's first billionaire. In the history of Ohio, no city has been more populous, prosperous, and influential. Cleveland can credit its growth and strength as a city to its wealth of diversity. |

The Cleveland Indians $16.46 First published by G. P. Putnam's Sons in 1949, Franklin "Whitey" Lewis's The Cleveland Indians begins with the organization's early years as the Cleveland Forest Citys, covers the 1920 World Series victory over the Brooklyn Dodgers, and concludes with the excitement of the 1948 pennant race. This early team history covers such Cleveland legends as Cy Young, from his days in Tuscarawas County and Canton and his time with the Cleveland Spiders; Bob Feller, his discovery and development; and Larry Doby, the second African American to play in the major leagues and the first to play in the American League. It also delivers such forgotten and lesser-known stories as professional baseball's first-ever perfect game, thrown by John Lee Richmond of Worcester against the Cleveland Forest Citys on June 12, 1880; the acquisition of Napoleon Lajoie and the city's vote to change the team's name to the Napoleons (Naps) in his honor; and Charles W. Somers and John F. Kilfoyl and the birth of the American League. |

Cleveland Metroparks $21.37 A century ago, William A. Stinchcomb, aged 27, closed his annual report as chief engineer of parks for the City of Cleveland with a challenge to create an outer ring of parks and boulevards to benefit all residents of Greater Cleveland. By 1912, legislation authorizing it had been enacted, and three acres of land were acquired through a donation. This formed the nucleus of the vast park system that now includes almost 21,000 acres. Cleveland Metroparks has provided generations of area residents with readily accessible facilities for year-round recreation. The park provides opportunities for hiking, horseback riding, swimming, cycling, golfing, and boating. Use of the park, which crosses the boundaries of approximately 48 communities in the Cleveland area, has become a tradition for many families. |

Cleveland and It's Streetcars $19.73 Cleveland and Its Streetcars takes the reader back to when railway cars dominated the local street scene. The book focuses on the era of 19101954, from the time that Cleveland Railway Company took over operation of the consolidated streetcar lines to the day that the last streetcar rumbled over the city's streets. Cleveland's trailer trains, articulated cars, and its Peter Witt car model were widely admired by the nation, and the streetcar reigned supreme through the end of World War II. In 1942, the Cleveland Transit System (CTS) took over the streetcar lines, and eager to "modernize" its fleet, it decided to replace the streetcars with buses, trackless trolleys, and a crosstown rapid transit line. After the end of the war, in May 1945, the first post-war conversion took place. Then the pace of replacing the streetcars with rubber-tired vehicles quickened. By 1954, the task was complete. This book, with over 200 photographs, documents this changing Cleveland scene -- when a wonderful era in transportation flourished and then, sadly, disappeared. |

Cleveland Slovaks $18.47 Cleveland's Slovaks can best be characterized as survivors. Many survived ethnic persecution and poverty so they could have a chance at something better. Beginning with a small core of immigrants seeking work aboveground rather than in the coal mines of neighboring states, Cleveland's Slovak community grew through a giant chain migration. Their neighborhoods flourished close to their jobs and their churches. Many of the ancestors of today's Slovaks came to the United States classified as Hungarians. In their hearts, though, they knew what they were and what language they spoke. They held on to their native language even as they learned English and unwaveringly encouraged their children to strive for the opportunity America offered. According to the 2000 census, 93,500 northeast Ohioans claim Slovak heritage. The photographs in Cleveland Slovaks show their neighborhoods and family life and give readers an appreciation of the community's legacy. |

Cleveland Park $21.38 Once a single 998-acre farm, Cleveland Park can trace its origins to 1740, when large country estates, such as Rosedale, Twin Oaks, Tregaron, and Red Tops, were located here. Alexander Graham Bell and President Grover Cleveland, the neighborhood's namesake, owned such estates, a few of which remain to this day. Although a mere 60 houses dotted the landscape in 1903, the building boom of the 1920s created numerous houses and commercial buildings along Connecticut Avenue. Today, the neighborhood is a modern urban residential neighborhood with many fine examples of American architecture and urban planning concepts. Cleveland Park documents the cultural, social, environmental, and architectural evolution of the neighborhood, offering photographs from the opening night of the famous art deco Uptown Theater and of the first strip mall in America, the Park and Shop. Combined with interior and exterior images from some of the celebrated apartment houses that remain and those of the now-demolished Bureau of Standards complex, this volume is certain to both delight and surprise the reader. |

Cleveland's Flats $21.37 Cleveland is home to many fascinating neighborhoods and districts. Perhaps the most intriguing, however, is an area known as the Flats. Typically, the term aFlatsa refers to the northern portion of the Cuyahoga River Valley. The Cuyahoga River ceases to be the idyllic flow of water seen to the south of Cleveland as it approaches the cityas steel mills. The river is more man-made than natural where it meets the Flats, and a wide array of industries sit along its banks. The Flats have been a vital component and a reflection of Clevelandas rise, decline, and ongoing renaissance. Clevelandas Flats is a chronicle of this remarkable region. From the refineries of Standard Oil to massive ore boats carefully navigating the Cuyahoga, Clevelandas Flats treats the reader to scenes found in no other place. |

Brewing in Cleveland $21.39 Beginning in the mid-1800s, the beer-brewing industry in Cleveland experienced its most extensive growth due to the rapidly increasing immigrant population of mostly Germans, Czechs, and Irish. The breweries enjoyed great success until the Prohibition era closed all brewing operations down for 14 dry years. In 1933, the industry started anew, and Clevelanders were able to enjoy locally made beer for 50 more years before business conditions led to the industry's second demise. Today the industry has once again experienced a rebirth, this time on a smaller scale with the emergence of a number of popular brewpubs and microbreweries. |

Cleveland: The Flats, the Mill, and the Hills $28.92 The Flats, a district near downtown Cleveland, was once was the vibrant heart of Midwestern industry and is now in the throes of change: Some of its warehouses and factories have been transformed into nightclubs and restaurants, while homes in adjacent neighborhoods have been replaced by mini-mansions. In "Cleveland," photographer Andrew Borowiec documents the Flats today and evokes the way of life they once embodied. Given the rare opportunity to access one of Cleveland's vast steel mills before it was modernized or destroyed, Borowiec employed his camera to explore the Flats and its monuments of American industry. His striking black and white images reveal the broken power and vulnerability of the once-mighty mill as well as its relation to the surrounding city and its neighborhoods. The commercial buildings, factories, warehouses, and iron bridges that sustained Cleveland's industrial pulse convey a quiet dignity in these compelling photographs, as do the modest frame houses that sheltered those who labored for decades in the Flats. As Clevelanders struggle to redefine themselves as citizens of a twenty-first-century corporate metropolis, the Flats stand as a haunting testament to a time when men worked with their hands and steel was indeed the backbone of our nation. Borowiec's compassionate but unflinchingly honest gaze challenges us to look both at and beyond the images of Cleveland and to meditate on our common history of loss and rebirth. |

The Full Cleveland $18.73 "When we were rich, we had no real use for the Easter Bunny." With trademark elegance and wit, Boyce Parkman, the young narrator of Terry Reed's smart, sexy novel, "The Full Cleveland," begins the story that follows a privileged Shaker Heights family's dramatic reversal of fortune -- and an American girl's unforgettable coming-of-age. Bright, athletic, charming, the five Parkman children appear to be living the American dream in a beautiful house in a beautiful neighborhood. But as Boyce is transformed from a precocious ten-year-old into a passionate, idealistic young woman, she comes to see the dream as an illusion. Part of the problem is her parents. Dad, the Protestant, seems intent on nurturing his children with the noble ideals of an obsolete generation. He wants them to see great works of art and to witness the realities of life on the other side of the tracks, in the slums of inner-city Cleveland. Mother, the Catholic, is hell-bent on having her kids achieve something in life, and her method is to make them pray for it. Add the confusing influences of teenage life in a charmed world -- the gorgeous girls, the beautiful boys, the sudden friend: school genius, scholarship student, and bus driver's daughter. Finally Boyce has to find her own philosophical path through the turmoil of her adolescence and the unraveling of her family's fortunes. Her first real love, her first defiant act, her first glimpse of a universe outside her own all mark her as she navigates her way through comic detours and unexpected turns of fate. Here is an original voice that dazzles and delights, a heroine both fierce-hearted and funny, who sets out to find the true meaning of success. In the end, the fortune lost is seamlessly linked with childhood's passing, becoming a deft metaphor for the journey of everyman, and every girl. "The Full Cleveland" takes its place on the short shelf of great coming-of-age fiction. |

Gaimari is one of the new breed of mobsters who has put aside Borsalino hats and shiny silks suits for a college education and a milion-dollar vocabulary. Presidencies of Grover Cleveland $36.43 Grover Cleveland, who served as both the twenty-second and the twenty-fourth president of the United States, dominated the American political scene from 1884-1896. Viewed at one time as a monument of presidential courage, Cleveland has over the past generation been dismissed by historians as a "Bourbon democrat," the symbol of that wing of the Democratic party devoted to preserving the status quo and protecting the interests of the propertied. Cleveland's Downtown Architecture $21.38 Downtown Cleveland has many architectural landmarks that define this big, proud city on the lake. Most famous is Terminal Tower, the "grand dame" of Cleveland skyscrapers, which was the tallest office building outside of New York City from 1930 until 1967. Other notable high-rises such as the BP building, Key Tower (at 948 feet one of the tallest in the nation), and the new Federal Court House with its distinctive lighted cornice also dominate the city's beautiful Lake Erie skyline. There was the Jewish Navy, taking laundry trucks to Canada and bringing back barges filled with booze. Then there were the rug joints the Harvard Club, the Beverly Hills Club, the Mounds Club where Moe Dalitz mastered the art of taking your money and helped build Las Vegas, the best "man trap" in America. Join author Ted Schwarz as he tracks wanted killers through the Statler Hotel and navigates the secret history of the Cleveland mob. |

Cleveland Browns History $18.65 There was little fanfare when Art "Mickey" McBride flew into Chicago in 1945 to purchase a professional football team for Cleveland. But that act set in motion a tradition that has brought the city of Cleveland together on Sunday afternoons for (most of) the sixty years to follow. Cleveland Browns History is the story of championship seasons, legendary coaches, and Hall of Fame players. Coach Paul Brown led his teams to seven league title games in their first 17 seasons. Running backs Marion Motley, Jim Brown, and Leroy Kelley each rushed over opposing defenses and straight into Canton, Ohio, along with fellow Browns like Otto Graham, Ozzie Newsome, and Len Ford. The "Kardiac Kids" in 1980 had too many nail-biters for some fans, but won the AFC Central in typical fashion -- by three points in the final game of the season. All these stories, plus those of the many unsung heroes to don the NFL's only logo-less helmet, fill the pages of this book, sure to delight any Cleveland Browns fan. |

The Cleveland Era $30.79 Politicians at Washington very generally failed to realize that the advent of President Hayes marked the dismissal of the issues of war and reconstruction. They regarded as an episode what turned out to be the close of an era. They saw, indeed, that public interest in the old issues had waned, but they were confident that this lack of interest was transient. They admitted that the emotional fervor excited by the war and by the issues of human right involved in its results was somewhat damped, but they believed that the settlement of those issues was still so incomplete that public interest would surely rekindle. For many years the ruling thought of the Republican party leaders was to be watchful of any opportunity to ply the bellows on the embers. Besides genuine concern over the way in which the negroes had been divested of political privileges conferred by national legislation, the Republicans felt a tingling sense of party injury. |

Grover Cleveland: The American Presidents Series $12.17 A fresh look at the only president to serve nonconsecutive terms. Though often overlooked, Grover Cleveland was a significant figure in American presidential history. Having run for President three times and gaining the popular vote majority each time -- despite losing the electoral college in 1892 -- Cleveland was unique in the line of nineteenth-century Chief Executives. In this book, presidential historian Henry F. Graff revives Cleveland's fame, explaining how he fought to restore stature to the office in the wake of several weak administrations. Within these pages are the elements of a rags-to-riches story as well as an account of the political world that created American leaders before the advent of modern media. |

Cleveland Heights: The Making of an Urban Suburb $23.98 Now a bustling city of more than 50,000 residents, Cleveland Heights, situated just six miles from Cleveland's Public Square, boasts a history that begins well before its own incorporation. The region was once home to Native American tribes including the Erie and Seneca, and stalwart pioneers established settlements in the area as early as the late eighteenth century. In the postCivil War period, as Cleveland was becoming an industrial metropolis, affluent residents began moving to the newly developed "garden suburbs," anxious to live closer to nature and farther from the smoky city and its increasingly diverse population. Born of this same desire, Cleveland Heights was founded in 1901. Here, in this isolated countryside owned by substantial families like the Silsbys, Minors, Comptons, and Taylors, entrepreneurs and city officials envisioned a clean and comfortable suburb for Cleveland's elite. Officially designated a city in 1921, Cleveland Heights quickly became not the homogenized suburb envisioned by early developers, but a community of widely divergent neighborhoods and people. Newcomers belonged to varying class, religious, ethnic, and racial backgrounds. A century after its founding, Cleveland Heights has become an "inner-ring urban suburb," boasting gracious homes of architectural distinction and attractive parks, but also facing the modern challenges of a dwindling population and commercial districts in need of economic revitalization. This new volume illustrates, in both word and image, the evolving life of Cleveland Heights from its beginning as part of East Cleveland Township, one of the region's first suburbs, to the present day. |

Cleveland's Buckeye Neighborhood $17.64 Although it has been called "Little Hungary" or "Little Budapest," Cleveland's Buckeye Road neighborhood exceeds that description. A more apt moniker might be "Little Danube." Like the Danube, Buckeye's history has flowed through a multicultural immigrant community and into a modern urban neighborhood striving to make its mark. Fueled by the industry of its first settlers in the 1880s, the district spread from what is now Buckeye Road and Woodland Avenue to the border of Shaker Square. Shops, restaurants, taverns, and other businesses too numerous to count flourished. The Buckeye neighborhood became a commercial center to serve immigrants and their families who worked at the factories that dotted Buckeye's west end. Community life was refueled over the years by waves of immigrants--mainly from Hungary--fleeing various tides of oppression in Europe. As the 1970s approached, Buckeye, like many Cleveland areas, became a victim of urban flight. Today residents and businesses, along with the Buckeye Area Development Corporation, are working to create and sustain another resurgence in this grand neighborhood. |

Merging Traditions: Jewish Life in Cleveland $28.61 Out of a small group of Jewish settlers that came to Cleveland in 1839 sprang the large, vibrant, and diverse Jewish community, numbering in excess of 81,500, that has contributed significantly to Cleveland's life. At the turn of the century, many immigrants found work in Cleveland's thriving garment industry, then second only to New York's. Others entered the building trades, and those with entrepreneural inclinations opened retail stores dedicated to serving their Jewish neighborhoods. The entry of Jews into the business mainstream facilitated inclusion into nearly every area of community endeavor--civic life, education, and culture. During World War II the community began to move to the suburbs, with Cleveland Heights emerging as the largest Jewish neighborhood outside of Cleveland. The exodus to the suburbs continued unabated until the mid-1950s, practically emptying the central city of its Jewish population. many moved still farther east in the 1960s. As families left the traditional Jewish enclaves for more affluent areas and purchased larger properties in the suburbs, the synagogues and Jewish institutions and facilities also migrated. At the time of his death in February 2003 Judah Rubinstein was working on this second edition of Merging Traditions: Jewish Life in Cleveland, which he initially co-wrote with the late Sidney Z. Vincent in 1978. This revised and updated pictorial review of the nearly two-century history of the Jewish community tells the story of Jewish settlement and achievement in Northeast Ohio and continues in the spirit of the original, illuminating the struggles and the successes of one particular immigrant group and providing a valuable perspective onCleveland's Jewish community, past and present. |

The Creature from Cleveland Depths $11.92 Fritz Leiber's "The Creature from Cleveland Depths" might have sounded far-fetched fifty years ago -- a comic warning about people being bossed around by little machines that ride on their shoulders. But now, it seems to describe the real world of cell phones, Blackberries and iPods, and its prediction of terrible things to come isn't so easy to shrug off. Leiber sets the tale in a future when "missiles are on the prowl," and most people live underground. George Gusterson is a writer with crazy ideas -- one being, he still lives on the surface. For another, he imagines a gizmo that would remind him of things like when to turn on the TV. George's mere whim inspires an actual gadget called the Tickler, just a "wire recorder and clock" at first, but then . . . it whispers constantly through an earphone. It instills positive thinking. It injects drugs. It makes decisions. It weights 28 pounds. And it won't get off. Only Gusterson understands what "the little fellow perched on your shoulder" is really saying, one word: "Obey " And only Gusterson knows what to say back, if it's not too late. |

Aviation's Great Recruiter: Cleveland's Ed Packard $11.1 Son of Czechoslovakian immigrants, Edward T. Packard sold his first model airplane in Cleveland in 1919 at the age of thirteen, a simple "Pushers Stick Model." Lindbergh's 1927 solo flight conquering the Atlantic galvanized the aviation industry and jumpstarted his business, Cleveland Model and Supply Company, which at that time offered an extensive line of all-balsa wood model airplanes authentically replicating the early prototypes. During World War II, Packard manufactured the most complete line of American, Allied, and foreign model airplanes, which led to a famous worldwide enterprise whose growth required the involvement of his parents and his four brothers and ultimately employed nearly one hundred people. As aircraft designs became more complex, so did Cleveland models. The popularity of these realistic miniatures and the insight many hobbyists gained through their construction played a major role in the rapid World War II aviation mobilization, because the U.S. Army Air Corps was able to enlist recruits with skills in the principles of flight and aviation. Author H. L. Schreiner's collection of "flying pulps" and aviation publications served as the primary impetus for his comprehensive research. Included in this handsomely illustrated aviation history are photos and plans that originally accompanied the model kits and a never-before-published illustrated-plans index. Rare color photographs of Cleveland National Air Race aircraft and their daredevil pilots will be of interest to modelers, collectors, pilots, and aviation historians, who will find his book to be a significant addition to their libraries. |

Sundays in the Pound: The Heroics and Heartbreak of the 1985-89 Cleveland Browns $19.56 Before Art Modell moved the team to Baltimore, and before the frustrating expansion years and countless front office mistakes of the twenty-first century, there were the Browns of the late 1980s. The years 1985 to 1989 saw the Cleveland Browns explode out of a decade and a half of inconsistency and mediocrity to win four American Football Conference Central Division titles and make the playoffs five straight years. Twice they came within inches of a Super Bowl appearance, led by an unforgettable cast of characters Cleveland embraced and still cherishes. These teams are perhaps the most memorable in the history of Cleveland professional sports. Sundays in the Pound traces quarterback Bernie Kosar's winding path from Youngstown to Florida to Cleveland, explains why there was so much more to running back Earnest Byner than one unforgotten fumble, and reveals how cornerback Hanford Dixon created a canine phenomenon in the end-zone stands that has persevered to this day. Author Jonathan Knight delves into "the Drive" and "the Fumble"; examines the fairy-tale performance of an aging veteran quarterback who directed the Browns through the snow and into the playoffs in his final game at the old, cavernous Cleveland Stadium on Lake Erie's shoreline; and recounts an epic playoff saga in which the Browns staged one of the greatest comebacks in the history of Cleveland sports. Cleveland Browns fans throughout the country fondly remember the "Dawg Days," and they will welcome Sundays in the Pound. |

The Franchise: Lebron James and the Remaking of the Cleveland Cavaliers $3.95 Award-winning sports journalist Terry Pluto and NBA beat writer Brian Windhorst (both of the Akron Beacon Journal) give us an in-depth look at how a team and a city are being rebuilt around superstar LeBron James. When the Cleveland Cavaliers won the top pick in the 2003 NBA draft, an entire city exhaled. How often does a LeBron James come along? Especially for Cleveland, a midmarket rustbelt city without a sports championship in fifty years, and for the Cavaliers, a team that had never reached the NBA finals. Now, everyone has a stake in LeBron: Cavs owner Dan Gilbert, who bought the team because of the young star. Teammates counting on him for a championship ring. Nike and the NBA, looking for the next Michael Jordan to promote. The fans and downtown business owners and Cleveland civic leaders . . . even the popcorn vendors--everyone has something riding on this one guy. Chock full of facts and analysis. |

A Secret Life: The Lies and Scandals of President Grover Cleveland $15.38 The child was born on September 14, 1874, at the only hospital in Buffalo, New York, that offered maternity services for unwed mothers. It was a boy, and though he entered the world in a state of illegitimacy, a distinguished name was given to this newborn: Oscar Folsom Cleveland. The son of the future president of the United States-Grover Cleveland. The story of how the man who held the nation's highest office eventually came to take responsibility for his son is a thrilling one that reads like a sordid romance novel-including allegations of rape, physical violence, and prostitution. The stunning lengths that Cleveland undertook to conceal what really happened the evening of his son's conception are truly astonishing-including forcing the unwed mother, Maria Halpin, into an insane asylum. A Secret Life also finally reveals what happened to Grover Cleveland's son. Some historians have suggested that he became an alcoholic and died a young man-but Lachman definitively establishes his fate here for the first time. In this gripping historical narrative, Charles Lachman sets the scandal-plagued record straight with a tightly-coiled plot that provides for narrative history at its best. |

Kardiac Kids: The Story of the 1980 Cleveland Browns $14.57 A heart-pounding journey through the most exciting season in Cleveland Browns' history Every longtime Cleveland sports fan knows about "Red Right 88, " the play that ended the Browns' 1980 season. Trailing 14-12 late in the fourth quarter against the Oakland Raiders in an icy, windy playoff game, the Browns opted to eschew a field-goal attempt and go for a touchdown. Quarterback Brian Sipe's ill-fated throw, intended for tight end Ozzie Newsome, was intercepted by Oakland in the end zone, bringing to a halt Cleveland's "kardiac" campaign. In Kardiac Kids Jonathan Knight paints a portrait of the Browns' storybook 1980 season and its impact on the city of Cleveland. Knight takes us through that unforgettable year from beginning to end, describing in great detail how the city simply fell in love with this team. It was the year long-suffering Cleveland sports fans finally had something to be proud of. Tickets were at a premium, players were pursued like rock stars, and songs were written about their on-field heroics. This was a team made up of individuals who weren't expected to be headline grabbers. It had a personable, often humorous head coach and a starting quarterback who was supposed to be too short, too slow, and whose arm was far too weak (and who, by the way, became the National Football League's Most Valuable Player in 1980). A group of football journeymen came together to form the best offensive line in the NFL, and a beleaguered defense improved just enough to help the team realize its destiny. Though the Cleveland Browns boast four world championships and possess a rich and respected past, the magical 1980 season was clearly the most memorable in team history. Kardiac Kids is atribute to that team. |
