The Gravedancers DVD Review

Surprisingly entertaining, "The Gravedancers" is one of the "After Dark Horrorfest" by Lionsgate. There are "8 films to die for" to be exact. "The Gravedancers" is about a group of three college friends who were reunited at the funeral of their dead friend. They spent that evening drinking and reminiscing at the graveyard where their friend was buried. Submitting to alcohol, the trio ended up dancing on the nearby graves after reading a note they thought to be a forgotten sympathy card while unknowingly releasing vengeful spirits.

The movie built up enough suspense in the first three-quarter that's a throwback to the pre-slasher horror genre. In the last quarter, the movie lost steam. The final confrontation with the ghosts seemed rush and uninspired. By this time, you sense the B-movie feel of the production unlike the first three-quarters of the movie. I thought the special effects and makeup depicting the ghosts were second rate. They probably could have done much better using not showing the ghosts fully and cloaking them in mystery.

Another glaring drawing back was the acting. It was so-so at best. There were familiar faces, namely, Dominic Purcell ("Blade Trinity") and Tchéky Karyo ("The Patriot"). Tchéky was great as a paranormal expert. I thought the other actors, including Purcell, were lacking in their portrayal of haunted victims. Overall, Purcell, his movie wife, Clare Kramer, his friend, Marcus Thomas, and his ex-girlfriend, Josie Maran, did not look convincingly scared that there were ghosts after them.

All in all, the movie is worth a rental if you're looking to get scared by something other than slasher movies.
