Is it okay use sand in a panther gecko cage? Gecko owners only, please!?

I'm getting a Panther gecko, and I was doing some research. However, one thing everyone disagrees on is whether or not to use sand. Some say it's fine, some say it can possibly kill your pet due to impaction, and some say that it's fine as long as you don't use it in a baby's cage. What do you do?

For a very young gecko, I really recommend against it. It's best to keep babies on a safe and easy to clean substrate, like paper towel. Babies are much more delicate, and are more susceptible to things like impaction.

When it reaches adulthood, however, you do have a choice of sand. In general, I don't like it as a substrate, because it is such a big factor in so many impactions, however if you do want to use sand, here are a few tips:

- NEVER use calcium sand or any of those colored man-made sands. In general, if you can find it at a pet store, avoid it. Real sand is made up of particals of natural material. Man made sand is made up mostly of chemicals. These are iffy for your gecko at the best of times, because they are much less digestible than a normal sand (even though they claim otherwise). Calcium sands, however, pose a much worse risk. When they add calcium to the mix, and your gecko swallows it, it seriously throws off the calcium levels in his body. Getting too much calcium can cause him to get sick, just as getting too little can. Also, it's perhaps the least digestible of all available sands, and the most likely to lodge and start forming an impaction.

- Use a sifted play sand. You can get play sand at hardware or garden stores. Sift it to get the larger pieces out. This gives you a more natural sand, which is a little safer if swallowed.

- Feed your gecko outside his cage. If you don't allow his food to come into contact with the sand, there's a much lower chance of him swallowing it and becoming impacted. Invest in a box or plastic critter cage to use as a feeder cage. Put him and his food inside at feeding time, and let him eat for about 20 minutes. (While he's getting used to it, he may be scared, so give him a little extra time at first.) This gives you the added bonus of being able to tell exactly when and how much he's eating.

- Take him to a vet for regular checkups. This is important for any pet, but if yours is at risk of a disease or impaction, it's doubly so. Impactions either happen quickly and noticeably and can be treated, or build slowly over years, and by the time you notice it's too late. Regular check ups and an informed vet may catch an impaction in its early stages and prevent you from losing your gecko before his time.

Honestly, I'd recommend not doing sand. They don't live on sand in the wild, and it can pose a health risk. Better substrates would be a soil/clay mixture packed solidly, repti-carpet, slate, tile, newspaper or paper towels.

Many people do choose to use sand, and it can be a fine choice, you just have to be extra vigilant and careful.
