Green Bay Packers Number 1 Defensive Players
This season the Green Bay Packer’ defensive team is the number one defensive team in the National Football League. With a soon to be all-star Quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, their offensive team is ranked number six. It’s no wonder the Packers are on a four game winning streak with a record of 4 and 7. With some of the best players in the NFL, I’d bet my Poker chips sets that this team makes it into the playoffs and get a chance to brutally beat the Minnesota Vikings. Playing some of the hardest teams in the conference, the Green Bay Packers have been able to pull off a great season so far with the help of their young, motivated defensive team. Here are the top three players of the Packer season.
Clay Matthews, number 52, OLB-
Matthews was scooped up by the Green Bay Packers in this year’s first round draft pick. He was the 26th draft pick overall. This rookie is originally from Los Angeles, California and went to USC. Matthews scored his first touchdown against the Green Bay Packers all-time rival the Vikings during a Monday Night Football game this season. In week six against the Detroit Lions, Matthews made 3 tackles, assisted two sacks, and sacked Quarterback Culpepper twice. It’s no wonder he won the Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Week for that game. Again he was awarded with Rookie of the Week in week ten against the Dallas Cowboys. This guy is unstoppable.
A.J. Hawk, number 50, ILB-
Hawk was also a first round draft pick for the Green Back Packers back in 2006 and was the 5th overall pick that season. In his rookie season Hawk also received the Rookie of the Week award two times. He led the Packers’ defense with a total of 119 tackles, 82 solo. He got 2 interceptions, 3.5 sacks, 6 passes defended, and a forced fumble that year. He was ranked third in the voting for the Associated Press Defensive Rookie of the Year. Hawk is originally from Kettering, Ohio and the Packers are a proud team to have his career debut with their team.
Nick Barnett, number 56, ILB-
Though Barnett was out for much of last year’s season, he is surely making it up to the Packers this year. He has played his heart out helping Hawk and Matthews lead the number one defensive team in the league. Originally from Barstow, California, Barnett played as the strong side linebacker for Oregon State. As a senior, he led the conference with 121 tackles (62 solo) and was part of the number one All-Pacific 10 Conference selection. He went on to win the 2003 Defensive Rookie of the Year in his debuting NLF season. As an important part of this team, Barnett has made some remarkable plays for the Packers this year.
Johnny Jolly, number 97, DE-
Jolly was also drafted back in 2006 as the Packers round six pick, the number 183 pick overall. This 26 year old from Houston, Texas attended Texas A&M University and played on the team as defensive tackle. He now makes huge efforts to lead this all-star defensive team and bring the Green Bay Packers to the playoffs.
