In the golden days of sports, it used to be that a player remained loyal to his team to the bitter end. It wasn't uncommon to see a star play for his hometown team for the length of his entire career, never to see a championship ring. In fact, some of the greatest players in the professional leagues were sure victims of this fate. Look at hall of fame football star, Dan Marino for example. Or take the all-time leader of consecutive games played in major league baseball, Cal Ripkin Jr. These players endured the good seasons with the bad seasons, and fans returned loyalty with respect and reverence for their idols.

 

The times have changed, and it seems the best motto to express sports stars sentiments is: "If you can't beat ‘em, join ‘em". The trend is all too common in the world of professional athletes. Money talks, and you won't have a hard time spotting where it's speaking the loudest. Take for example the not too distant past when two of the biggest rivals in sports faced each other with an echo of ‘boos' and cheers from the crowd. Those teams, of course, were the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox, and that player was none other than centerfielder Johnny Damon.

 

Perhaps you're not a huge sports fan and don't have a high definition television to watch all the games. Still, it isn't hard to relate to the sentiment of betrayal. Ok, so maybe betrayal is a bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly safe to say that pop stars today are commonly caught letting down their fans. Another prime example, and you don't have to be a satellite TV subscriber to have seen this one, was the recent upheaval over Tiger Wood's personal life. As an idol to so many young people, people all over couldn't help but feel that there was something tainted about the way their icons had been acting. Many of us dream of going big, but is it the ultimate fate of those in the spotlight, across HD TV screens all over, that the dark side beckons?

 

Whether it's a combination of the money or the lure of fame and vice, it seems that the expression goes beyond sports stars alone, and includes the realm of Hollywood actors and even Catholic priests! Joining the ranks of ones' adversaries may be the ultimate solution for those who've reached the pinnacle of their careers and see it as a natural progression in their line of work. If it isn't the need for a little evil in every good, or a little good in every evil, then perhaps it's just a natural consequence of our human tendencies. Although we may yearn for the olden days when the stars seemed loyal to one cause or one team alone, it may be something we simply need to get used to, that going to the other side is part of our ever-diversified perspective of the world.

Favre, Montana, Elway, Brady, and Manning all had equally great supporting casts. In fact, all have them have multiple other players that are going to make the Hall of Fame.

Brees had the second best season for a QB behind Dan Marino. And Brees has something Marino doesn't.

Lastly, who does Brees really have on his team? Jonathan Vilma? Darren Sharper? Jeremy Shockey? Seriously? Brees pretty much carried this team to the Super Bowl.

Brady had a loaded defense though. The man put up stats offensively when it mattered. I'll give him that. But so did Drew Brees.

Darren sharper is probably one of greatest safety's to ever play. so you can stop there. drew brees is good. one superbowl, one great season doesnt make you the best. peyton is not even the best and hes one super bowl and his stats compaired to bres is like compairing prealgerbra to calculus.

Drew is a great passer. and he throws to the open man. ill give him that. peyton has had way more talent around him receiver wise. but calling shockey a slouch is rediculous to say the least.

and wow. i don't think drew has got peyton manning on stats. but seriously football isn't about stats. its about the play on the field and winning. manning wins a lot. the only stat that really counts. and look at peyton on the field. his passing and his ability to play make is amazing. ive been watching a lot of football, montana, dan marino, jim kelly, john elway. and they werent the great pocket passer manning is. not even close.
