Help please all vegetarians!!?

I've been a vegetarian for a long time, and I have never had a problem with it before, but after watching a lot of the PETA stuff on animal cruelty, I've been iffy about using this new leather cell phone holder. I also play volleyball, and that's leather too.

My opinion in some ways is that the leather is a byproduct and to be completely honest, I will never be able to get away from anything that is made from animal byproducts now days. So I might as well get over it sense the leather wasn't taken out of cruelty toward the animals.

So what do all of you veggies think?? I want to hear more vegetarians' opinions than vegan opinions because some vegans are members of PETA and I don't want a lot of bullying, unless you are a normal vegan :] Thank you :]]]

The thing about by-products is that people see then as secondary to meat so a lesser sin

Obviously you don't get meat without killing an animal - but whats wrong with by-products?

You don't get leather without killing. Or gelatine, animals fats, collagen, etc.

They may be easier to ignore and they hide away in many products in ways that makes it confusing to work out where they are and harder to see the connection between them and animal killing.

Try seeing it like this - would you put 1 penny in an Al Queda collection tin?

Most people would say no - why not? 1 coin will not buy 1 bullet...

Because you don't like what they stand for , what they do, that they don't respect you... maybe those are reasons.

Buying leather is putting a few pennies in the collection tin for slaughter houses. It is just like that. It might seem innocent, but those slaughter houses make profits from selling all the blood, bone, connective tissues and skins. They sell it to stay in business and to make profit. Profit from suffering, death and pollution.

In the real world - money makes things happen. Where you spend your money affects what happens - when a business can't afford to kill animals, it won't.

It is logical - not extreme - to avoid paying for the slaughter houses if you don't like the idea of animals being killed for meat. Buying by-products sends a little donation to the slaughter house guys every time.

Now - the definition of Vegan was originally described in the Vegan Society 'Articles of Association' when they formed. They defined Veganism as meaning a lifestyle where you avoid exploiting animals 'wherever possible or practical'. It is not about extremes - you don't have to play volleyball barefoot! Maybe you don't get a leather interior on your car, or buy a leather jacket, but if you can only get leather shoes where you live - buy leather shoes. Try not to buy 100 pairs, just what you need!

Be a real vegan in the real world - you have to compromise a bit at times, but where you have a choice - choose vegan. Good luck.
