When Losing Beat Winning: Steelers 2009
Missing the playoffs was not the worst thing that could have happened to the Pittsburgh Steelers this season. Winning once there would have been even worse for the now former Super Bowl champions.
It is likely that an appearance in the post-season - and certainly one playoff win - would have convinced Steeler management and fans that the current roster is fully capable of winning the 2011 Super Bowl. And that would be treacherously wrong. A playoff victory would not change the fact that this Steeler roster fully earned losses to Kansas City, Oakland, and Cleveland; was pushed to overtime by Tennessee; and needed late game miracles to defeat Green Bay and Minnesota at home. 9-7 could easily have been a well-deserved 6-10.
I'm not saying that a full Pittsburgh Pirates-style "Blow-up-and-Build-from-scratch" is in order, but big changes must be made. Here is what needs to be done to get the Steelers back to the playoffs as soon as possible (which may not be next year):
- Make Mike Tomlin the "Real" Head Coach. When Tomlin was hired Steeler ownership "forced" him to keep Dick LeBeau as Defensive Coordinator and Bruce Aryans as Offensive Coordinator. That arrangement worked perfectly for two years, culminating in a Super Bowl victory. But Tomlin is no longer a young, first-year "Head" Coach taking over a successful, veteran team. Apparently, Tomlin has already decided to keep Aryans, but he must be permitted to cut himself loose of LeBeau. Tomlin is a defense-oriented coach. And his philosophies are not those of LeBeau. Tomlin learned under Tony Dungy, a 4-3 master, and ran a 4-3 as Minnesota's defensive coordinator. LeBeau is a 3-4 legend. It's time for Tomlin to have a coordinator who will implement his philosophy. As it stands now, players have to wonder who is the real boss on defense. Was Tomlin over-ruled by LeBeau when he wanted to bench players late in the season? I'm just askin'.
- Resolve the Ward-Roethlisberger Dispute. It is real. There is a big problem when a veteran, former Super Bowl MVP and former Pro Bowl wide-receiver goes on national television before a big game (oxymoron) and states that the quarterback is punking out by not playing with a concussion. Ward was far out of line. Even if Roethlisberger could have played with the concussion, Ward should have kept his mouth shut. And this dispute apparently went beyond Ward and Ben. Another player said that the team was split 50-50 on the issue. That tells me that it was an issue for the whole team that should have been addressed behind closed doors. Ward made that impossible. He needs a dose of Chuck Noll. It's time for him to be told to "get on with his life's work." There is no room for the size of his head on a team that needs to re-tool. And the fact that Roethlisberger was voted MVP by his teammates says that they know it, too.
- Make the Tough Decisions about the Aging Super-Bowlers.Casey Hampton, James Farrior, Willie Parker, and others got old in a hurry. It happened with the Steeler Super Bowl teams of the 1970's, but the organization was too much in love with those players to let them go. And they paid dearly for it. You can add Jeff Reed to the above list. He may not be old, but those kick-off returns that went the distance had something to do with Reed's inability to kick the ball deeper than the 15 yard-line. Add in the fact that he has been in trouble with the law a couple of times and his value diminishes even further. He may even be a detriment to the younger players.
- Fire Every Offensive Lineman. Yes, the defensive backfield needs help, but much of that will come with the return of Troy Polamalu. The Offensive Line, however, is the one area of the team that truly does require a Pittsburgh Pirates-style "Blow-up-and-Build-from-scratch." In 2008 the Steelers offensive line became the worst in history ever to win a Super Bowl. This team had no business going that far with such an inept unit. The offense "succeeded" solely because of Ben Roethlisbergers' ability to turn running for his life into an art form. There may not have been another quarterback in the history of the game who could have won a Super Bowl with that severely deficient offensive line. The Steelers need five new starters on this unit and it should be the primary focus of their draft and free agent strategy - by far.
The Steelers could make theses changes and still not make the playoffs next season. But the roster as it stands today - even if it had made this year's postseason - is fighting the Browns for last place one year from now.
