How to get a Draft horse to lose weight?
We looked at this Belgian Draft horse cross today and the owner said she was overweight. If we did get her (Which I hope!) How can I get her to lose some weight? The vet told the owner that she MUST get some weight off of her to be healthy but the owner said she thinks its 'cute' and she's right it is cute but I wouldn't risk my horse's life for 'cuteness' If she comes home with me the weight comes OFF but how?
Cut back on feed- if she's an easy keeper she might be fine on just hay- no grain, no treats, etc.
Ride her and work her lots! Give her time to get into shape, of course. I was working with an overweight pony and I didn't ride her at all for the first two weeks- I just hand walked her. Then I'd ride at a walk for fifteen minutes, working slowly up to the trot. Talk to your vet, and the horse's current vet, for ideas and advice.
Please get this mare vet checked before you buy her. If she's been overweight for awhile and the owner isn't careful, she may have foundered in the past. I've taken care of foundered horses, and it can be difficult, although it is worth it! You'd have to decide if the extra care is worth it to you.
You're right about the weight needing to come off. An overweight horse isn't just at risk for joint pain as they age- things like founder and colic become much more likely.
That owner sounds like the kind I hate the most. They have horses for all the wrong reasons.
Just give the mare time and gradually cut her food and increase her exercise. You'll be fine!

The Draft: An Interview with God $12.95 "Author Patricia Hill had no idea that she was being interviewed by the Lord. All the time she was taking notes, the Lord was taking notes too. 'The Draft' reveals those personal moments where a decision must be made to follow God or turn away. The Lord gave Patricia Hill a chance to die in the flesh and to begin her new life with Him. She had to bury her old self to write this book the way God asked her to. The Lord works in mysterious ways, and He will show you yourself in a beautiful way, and then He will show you the ugliness inside of you too. The best picture of you comes from the Lord. The most beautiful picture you can imagine is perfection toward the Lord's will for you and in you." |

Second Draft of My Life $13.99 Forty-two years and five books into her life, Charlotte Dearborn abandons her noncommittal boyfriend and her sinking-ship writing career, and becomes an elementary school teacher. Sure, she's giving up her dream of being a famous novelist, but in exchange she'll find a stable income, job satisfaction, and maybe even love. At least that's how it'd work if she were a character in one of her novels. In real life, she's busy coping with twenty yelling first-graders, a teacher's lounge full of nasty coworkers, and a series of romantic misadventures that fall far, far short of the real thing. Charlotte's struggle to navigate the waters of a new career, a new single life, and the loss of her identity as a writer make Second Draft of My Life a funny, compulsively readable gem. From an author The Boston Globe applauded as "very, very good on the business of falling in and out of love," it is part romantic comedy, part manual for living, and wholly triumphant. |

Her Way $9.99 The truth about the most important woman in America In Her Way , two Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times investigative journalists deliver: Previously undisclosed details about the Clinton's multi-decade plan for powerincluding 8 years in the White House for Bill and 8 years for Hillary Never-before-revealed information about Hillary's involvement in her husband's campaigns - including cover-ups and the truth about Bill's draft record New details regarding Hillary's rivalry with Al Gore - and why it is likely to heat up. Provocative new information about Hillary's vote to authorize the Iraq War, and the steps she has taken to distance herself from that vote Revelations about Bill Clinton's role in Hillary's campaign and his surprising opinion of Barack Obama New details of Hillary's failure to adhere to Senate ethics rules, and what this says about her political empire She is one of the most influential and recognizable figures in our country, and perhaps the single most divisive individual in our political landscape. She has been the subject of both hagiography and vitriolic smear jobs. But although dozens of books have been written about her, none of them have come close to uncovering the real Hillary--personal, political, in all her complications. Now, as she make her historic run for the presidency, Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times reporters Jeff Gerth and Don Van Natta Jr. bring us the first comprehensive and balanced portrait of the most important woman in American politics. Drawing upon myriad new sources and previously undisclosed documents, Her Way shows us how, like many women of her generation, Hillary Rodham Clinton tempered a youthful idealism with the realities of corporate America and big-league politics. It takes readers from the dorm rooms at Wellesley to the courthouses of Arkansas and Washington; to the White House and role as First Lady like none other; inside the back rooms of the Senate, where she expertly navigates the political and legislative shoals; to her $4 million mansion in Washington, where she presides over an unparalleled fundraising machine; and to her war room, from which she orchestrates ferocious attacks against her critics. Throughout her career, she has been alternately helped and hindered by her marriage to Bill Clinton. Her Way unravels the mysteries of their political partnership--one of the most powerful and enigmatic in American history. It also explains why Hillary is such a polarizing figure. And more than any other book, it reveals what her ultimate hopes and ambitions are--for herself and for America. |

The NFL Draft $1.99 This is the eBook version of the printed book. This Element is an excerpt from Stumbling On Wins: Two Economists Expose the Pitfalls on the Road to Victory in Professional Sports (9780132357784) by David J. Berri and Martin B. Schmidt. Available in print and digital formats. Why NFL teams’ conventional approach to the draft just doesn’t work--and what they should be doing instead. If the NFL draft worked according to conventional wisdom, the greatest surplus value would be found at the top of the draft. However, the data suggests that picks in the top half of the second round have the greatest surplus value. This means teams in the first round, especially at the top, should be making every effort to trade down. They’ve traditionally done the opposite.... |

The Coming Draft $12.99 A frustrating war and an endless occupation. The very real prospect of more conflict overseas. A military stretched beyond its breaking point. The stage is set for the resumption of the draft. Now, in an explosive and provocative book, Philip Gold, a former Marine and a disaffected conservative, reveals why selective service should never come to pass–but might. In The Coming Draft, Gold charts the path that brought us to this treacherous point and posits an “exit strategy” for America to change its course. In candid language and through authoritative research, he uncovers the flaws of forced enlistment from ancient to recent times and suggests serious and more effective methods to protect the homeland. “Plans/reality mismatch” is how Gold describes the Bush administration’s handling of the Iraq war. This conflict’s deadly, years-long duration–with overtaxed volunteer troops–has led to the Marines missing their monthly recruitment quotas by up to 25 percent, soldiers over sixty being called out of retirement to serve, and in some cases National Guard tours being extended to 2031. Though the House of Representatives made a show of voting against the draft idea in 2004, Gold believes that a collusion of neoconservatives and liberals could eventually cause conscription to be reinstated. The neocon argument for the return of universal conscription rests in the expectation that American military presence will need to increase in order to combat the spreading threat of terrorism, while the left wing hopes that the revival of the draft will expand the scope of the debate about U.S. military policy, thereby making American involvement in wars an issue that potentially touches every household. Asserting that selective service has been neither effective nor historically validated, The Coming Draft provides evidence that the Founding Fathers’ concept of common defense differed from our own and allowed for “proper refusal” in addition to service. More damning, Gold insists that starting with the Universal Militia Act of 1791, the draft has been rife with demoralizing corruption and bad faith, whether it was exceptions for civilian slave owners in the Civil War or loophole-laden systems from World War I to Vietnam. Gold’s practical and innovative alternatives include the redefinition of service (to include earthquake and weather-related relief work), and a drastic rethinking of the duties of the National Guard. All this, he believes, must begin with setting limits on any president’s ability to launch an undeclared war. Written with an acute awareness and fierce intelligence, The Coming Draft is an indispensable work for anyone who is, or who might have to be, a soldier–and any citizen concerned about the future of our country. From the Hardcover edition. |

Draft of a Letter $17.5 From Second Draft : What other people learn From birth, Betrayal, I learned late.   My soul perched On an olive branch Combing itself, Waving its plumes.  I said   Being mortal, I aspire to Mortal things.   I need you, Said my soul, If you’re telling the truth.   Draft of a Letter is a book about belief—not belief in the unknowable but belief in what seems bewilderingly plain. Pondering the bodies we inhabit, the words we speak, these poems discover infinitude in the most familiar places. The revelation is disorienting and, as a result, these poems talk to themselves, revise themselves, fashioning a dialogue between self and soul that opens outward to include other voices, lovers, children, angels, and ghosts. For James Longenbach, great distance makes the messages we send sweeter. To be divided from ourselves is never to be alone. “If the kingdom is in the sky,” says the body to the soul, “Birds will get there before you.” “In time,” says the awakening soul, “I liked my second / Body better / Than the first.” To live, these poems insist, is to arise every day to the strange magnificence of the people and places we thought we knew best. Draft of a Letter is an unsettled and radiant paradiso, imagined in the death-shadowed, birth-haunted middle of a long life.   Praise for Fleet River “A sensibility this cogent, this subtle and austere is rare; even rarer is its proof that poetry still flows through all things and transforms all things in the process.”—Carol Muske-Dukes, Los Angeles Times Book Review |
