Japan Not Happy With Oscar Winner "the Cove"

"The Cove," which won an Oscar for the Best Documentary Film, is not appreciated by all movie goers as many Japanese citizens ended up disgusted with the film. Critics in Japan say that the film distorted the truth and many walked out on the movie before it was even finished.

"The Cove" was filmed covertly and mixes stunningly beautiful and captivating underwater shots of the dolphins with horrific footage of their slaughter. The film also puts out the message that Dolphin meat is loaded with toxic mercury. Director Louie Psihoyos said that the film was not meant to be a criticism of Japan but rather what he called a "Love Letter" in which he hopes to send a friendly signal to the Japanese to end what he claims to be their barbaric treatment of Dolphins.

"Our hope is the Japanese people will see this film and decide themselves whether animals should be used for meat and for entertainment," said Psihoyos after the Oscars presentation. The mayor of Taiji, where the film was shot, said that Dolphin hunting is and always has been legal in his area and that "The Cove" made statements that were not based on science. In a released official statement he said, "There are different food traditions within Japan and around the world. It is important to respect and understand regional food cultures, which are based on traditions with long histories."

The town of Taiji kills about 2,000 Dolphins annually and admits there is some mercury in the meat though nowhere near the dangerous levels alleged in the film. Psihoyos was not allowed by fishermen to access the cove where the dolphins are killed so he and his team secretly broke through barbed wire and fences at night to set up cameras that caught the slaughter.
