Denver Broncos Tickets - Shanahan Out After 14 Seasons
Many teams drop their head coaches after a disappointing season. After 14 years at the helm, however, letting head coach Mike Shanahan go has a little more weight. Not only was Shanahan the Denver Broncos' head coach, he was also their vice president of football operations, meaning he had a large amount of the control over personnel choices. The firing came after the Broncos ended their hopes of a playoff berth with a 52-21 loss to the San Diego Chargers. Just weeks before, the Broncos seemed to have their division all but won, but a poor performance in the last games ended their season. The search is now on to find a replacement for Shanahan, a search the Broncos haven't had to do in more than a decade.
During his time with the Broncos, Shanahan led to team to two Super Bowl wins and appearances in three conference championship games as well as seven post-seasons. Nine of his seasons boasted winning records. The Broncos finished this season with an 8-8 record. The reasons for Shanahan's dismissal come mostly from his inabilities as a general manager rather than his shortcomings as a coach. The Broncos' defense has struggled immensely as of late, and Shanahan was in charge of picking the players for the defense. They were ranked near the bottom of the league this year in defense by allowing 448 points. They also ranked near the bottom in the number of yards allowed. Even so, the firing came as a shock to many players, who voiced their surprised following the dismissal.
Shanahan first started his coaching career in the college ranks as a 20-something in the 1970s. He started his NFL career with the Broncos as their receivers coach in 1984 before moving to the offensive coordinator position the next season. He became the head coach of the then Los Angeles Raiders in 1988 until he was famously let go midseason the next year by owner Al Davis. He returned to the Broncos as a quarterbacks coach for the rest of the 1989 season and the 1990 season. He again moved to offensive coordinator with the Broncos in 1991 before taking the same position with the San Francisco 49ers in 1992. He remained in that position until he became the Broncos head coach in 1995. While at San Francisco, they saw some of their most prolific years, winning one Super Bowl and making it to two other NFC championship games.
After dismissing Shanahan, the Broncos moved on to looking for a replacement. One of the names on the list is the New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels. McDaniels is also being looked at by other teams searching for a head coach. It is also rumored that they are eyeing New York Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo and Tampa Bay Buccaneers secondary coach Raheem Morris. Unlike other struggling programs like the Cleveland Browns, the Broncos are expected to be an attractive draw for coaches. NFL Americas Game: Denver Broncos DVD $24.99 The Denver Broncos have one of the greatest winning traditions of any NFL team in the years since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger. But although the Broncos had made it to the Super Bowl four times (XII, XXI, XXII, and XXIV), they had come up short each time. That all changed in the late '90s. In 1997, entering his 15th NFL season, Denver quarterback John Elway had one thing missing from his resume: a Super Bowl ring. This year, Elway had all the help he needed-head coach Mike Shanahan, one of the most innovative minds in football; Terrell Davis, the AFC's leading rusher; and a defense studded with stars like Steve Atwater, Shannon Sharpe, and Neil Smith. Denver finished the regular season at 12-4 and entered the playoffs as a wild card. Three playoff victories later, the Broncos had reached Super Bowl XXXII. There, against the defending champion Green Bay Packers, Elway captured that elusive championship. With just three games left in the 1998 season, the 13-0 Denver Broncos looked like they might join the 1972 Miami Dolphins as the only undefeated teams in NFL history. At the age of 38, quarterback John Elway was still playing like he was in his prime, and Terrell Davis was on his way to breaking the 2,000-rushing -yards barrier (the 4th in NFL history). The '98 Broncos didn't break the '72 Dolphins' monopoly on perfect NFL seasons-they were upset by the New York Giants in Week 15-but they did repeat as Super Bowl Champions. Elway threw for 336 yards and won MVP honors in his final game, as Denver defeated the Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl XXXIII. America's Game: The Denver Broncos features exclusive interviews with Elway, Shanahan, Smith and Howard Griffith (1997) and with Davis, Sharpe and Mark Schlereth (1998). Join NFL Films as they tell the stories of the '97 and '98 Broncos, who won back-to-back Super Bowls and sent their Hall-of-Fame quarterback out in style. |

Take Me Home - The John Denver Story $11.03 Henry John Deutchendorf started his career in music as a guitar-strumming folkie who got his first big break as a member of The Chad Mitchell Trio in the early 1960s; with the dawn of the 1970s, as John Denver he became one of the biggest and most recognizable figures in popular music, and this made-for-TV drama examines his life and career both on and off-stage. Born the son of an Air Force pilot (Gerald McRaney), John Denver (Chad Lowe) sought the approval of his father, who didn't think much of his son's desire to become a musician. But once Denver heard his calling, he hit the road, first with the Chad Mitchell Trio and later as a solo act. Along the way, Denver met Annie (Kristin Davis), whom he would later marry and who would inspire one of his best-known songs. After several years of struggle (buoyed by Peter, Paul, and Mary's hit recording of his song Leavin' On a Jet Plane, Denver finally found commercial success with the song Take Me Home, Country Roads in 1972. But Denver's new success did not win him the love of his father, and his busy touring schedule took a toll on his marriage; when Denver's career fell into a slump in the '80s, he found himself alone without a wife, and began developing a serious problem with depression and alcohol. Based on John Denver's autobiography, Take Me Home: The John Denver Story features 15 of his original recordings on the soundtrack; originally produced for CBS, the film was first aired April 30, 2000. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |
