West Virginia (/ vrdnj WST / (helpinfo)) is a state in the Appalachians and Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States bordered by Virginia to the southeast, southwest Kentucky, Ohio, north-west and north-eastern Pennsylvania and Maryland. The capital and largest city is Charleston.
West Virginia became a state because of Wheeling Conventions, breaking away from Virginia during the Civil War. The new state was admitted to the Union June 20, 1863, and was a key state border civil war. West Virginia was the only state to secede from a State Confederate, and was one of only two states formed the American Civil War (the other is Nevada, which separated from Utah Territory).
The Census Bureau considers West Virginia part of the South, like most state is south of the Mason-Dixon line. West Virginia is bordered by Pennsylvania to the north, Ohio, north and west, by Kentucky to the west, through Maryland, north and east, and the Virginia Eastern and south. Ohio and the Potomac are part of the border.

The native vegetation of most of the state was originally mixed hardwood forest of oak, chestnut, maple, beech and white pine, with willow and American sycamore along the waterways of the state. The region was a favorite hunting ground of numerous Native American peoples before the arrival of European settlers. Many ancient mounds of the mound builder cultures survive man, especially in the areas of Moundsville, South Charleston, and Romney. In 1671, General Abraham Wood, under the direction of Royal Governor William Berkeley of the colony of Virginia, sent a party that discovered Kanawha Falls. In 1716, Governor Alexander Spotswood with about thirty horsemen attacked what is now Pendleton County. John Van Metre, an Indian trader, entered the north in 1725. King Charles II of England, in 1661, awarded to a company of gentlemen of the land between the Potomac and rivers Rappahannock, known as the Northern Neck. The grant finally came into possession of Thomas Fairfax, sixth Lord Fairfax of Cameron, and in 1746, a stone fountain has been erected in North Branch Potomac River to mark the western boundary of the concession. A considerable part of this country has been inspected by George Washington during 1748 and 1751. The paper written by the inspector says there are already many squatters, largely of German origin, along the South River Branch Potomac. Native American attacks have continued until after the War of Independence. Social conditions in western Virginia have been quite different from the eastern part of the state. The population is not homogeneous, since a considerable immigration came through Pennsylvania and included Germans, Protestant Ulster, and settlers from states further north. The counties of East and South were determined primarily by residents of eastern Virginia. During the American Revolution, the movement to create a state beyond the Alleghenies has been revived and a petition for the establishment of "Westsylvania" was presented to Congress on the basis that the mountains made a barrier almost impenetrable to the east. The rugged nature of the country made slavery unprofitable, and only time increased the social, political, economic and Cultural Rights (Tuckahoe-coherence) between two sections of Virginia.
The convention, which met in 1829 to form a new constitution for Virginia, protest against the counties beyond the mountains requires a title for the franchise and give the counties of slaves for the benefit of three-fifths of its population of slaves in the distribution of state representation in the U.S. House of Representatives. Accordingly, all counties beyond the Alleghenies except one voted against the Constitution, which, however, thanks to the support of the East.
The 185,051 Virginia constitutional convention reform of the Convention, sent a number of issues important to West Virginia. Vote extended to all white men aged 21 years. On October 24, 1861, voters in 41 counties have voted overwhelmingly to form a new state, the turnout was 34%. The name was later changed to West Virginia Kanawha.
West Virginia is the only State of the Union to secede from a confederate state, Virginia, during the civil war. In Richmond, April 17, 1861, 49 Delegates of the future state of West Virginia voted 17 in favor of the ordinance of secession, 30 against and 2 abstentions. Almost immediately after the vote to secede from the Union prevailed in the General Assembly of Virginia, recommends a meeting in Clarksburg that every county in northwestern Virginia send delegates to a convention to meet in Wheeling, May 13, 1861. When this first Wheeling Convention met, 425 delegates from 25 counties were present, although more than one third of the delegates were from the northern Panhandle, but soon there was a division of sentiment. Some delegates favored the immediate formation of a new state, while others have argues that since the Virginia secession has not yet been approved by the required referendum, such action would constitute a revolution against the United States. In Ohio County, home to Wheeling, only about one quarter of registered voters voted. Many voters in counties strongly pro-secession were absent in the Confederate army in the vote and refused to recognize transfer to their return. Charles Marquis Warren (December 16, 1912 August 11, 1990) was an American motion picture and television writer, producer, and director who specialized in the western genre. He is notable for his involvement in the creation of the television series Gunsmoke and Rawhide. Warren was born in Baltimore, Maryland, and was the son of a real estate broker and the godson of American writer F. Scott Fitzgerald. He was educated at Baltimore High School and Baltimore City College. During his college years he developed an interest in writing, resulting in a play entitled No Sun, No Moon, which was staged at Princeton University. Warren decided to go to Hollywood in 1933 when MetroGoldwynMayer took an option on the play. With the help of his godfather, Warren secured a position as a staff writer for the studio.
