Killing 2 Birds with One Stone: Fundraising and Branding
Most schools and non-profit organizations use everything you can think of to raise money. And with the school year now beginning, somewhere there are new parents or members put in the position of having to raise money.
This article covers four advantages of using spiritware and related items for fundraising. Spiritware, as used here,
is an item of clothing used to promote a group, school, organization, or idea.
- First, it’s functional. Spiritware, being clothing, is pretty useful. You can put logos, images of mascots, team names, etc., on almost any type of clothing. Usual items are tee shirts, jackets, sweat shirts and pants, and baseball caps. And, as it turns out, these are just about the most commonly worn garments.
- Second, it builds group spirit. Hence the name. This is an intangible, but obviously somebody who’s wearing something with a school’s or organization’s name on it identifies, on some level with that school or organization. Not only does this make the wearer more likely to buy related items, but it also exerts an influence on his or her peers to buy. This is where the group “brands” itself. And branding, once it starts, tend to keep itself going.
- Third, it’s an easier sale. Unlike candy or popcorn, you don’t use quality spiritware once, and then it’s gone. It’s reusable. People get more use out of it, compared to other things they buy for fundraising. They’re more inclined to feel like they’re really getting value for their money. This might seem to be a disadvantage for future sales, but people grow, they change shape, and they pass things on to younger siblings. And they do lose things, too. So it’s pretty hard to saturate the market.
- Fourth, it’s less expensive to the customer. Wait a minute here! How can a $40 sweatshirt be less expensive than a $2 candy bar? Well, you’d buy that sweatshirt anyway, since you need it. But instead of saying “Smithsville Tigers,” you’d spend the same money on one that says “Adidas” or “Aeoropostale.” So does the buyer give the markup to the Tigers, or to Adidas? If it’s to the Tigers, the customer saves the $2 for the candy bar that they would have bought if the Tigers used a candy fundraiser. Plus, the customers might even be slimmer and healthier by not buying a bunch of candy!
There are also the related items: backpacks, blankets, coffee cups, travel mugs, coozies, and more. This helps create a wide price range of products and prices that people can consider when they run a fundraiser.
Sources for your spiritwear can be found on the internet, in the yellow pages, and locally-operated apparel decorating shops. Consideration should be given to the quantity needed, the quantity you’ll keep on hand, setup fees, speed and method of delivery, quality of the items, price, and ease of communication with the source, as well as the process you’ll be using, such as screenprinting, direct printing, embroidery, or heat transfers. To sum up, spiritware is a time-proven way for schools and organizations to raise money. It has a natural attraction for those most likely to buy, offers something of real value to the end user, and helps them identify more strongly with the organization. And, not the least important, it spares the fundraiser from trying to sell people something they really don’t want or need.
