Buffalo Bills Tickets - Quarterback Position Uncertain In Buffalo

The Buffalo Bills have struggled to find a long-term starting quarterback since Jim Kelly retired, and that search has still not come to a close.  The team has gone in a multitude of directions over the years, but nothing has worked the way they'd hoped.  With a new season comes new hope, though, and the Bills are hoping that something can find solidarity at the quarterback position.

As of March 17th, the three quarterbacks on the Buffalo roster include Trent Edwards, Ryan Fitzpatrick and Brian Brohm.  New head coach Chan Gailey has announced that there will be an opening competition for the starting job and doesn't seem to be leaning in any particular direction as of now.  Edwards is the frontrunner by default, as he's got more starting experience and documented success than either of the other two options.  He showed promise two seasons ago, but regressed behind a porous offensive line last season.  Fitzpatrick hasn't done much in his short career, while Brohm has one start to his resume and has largely been a bust since being drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the second round a couple of years ago.

The team might be best-suited addressing their need for a long-term option in next month's draft.  The selection of a rookie quarterback in the draft would definitely add some sizzle to <a href="http://www.stubhub.com/buffalo-bills-tickets/">Buffalo Bills tickets</a> next season and give the fans hope for the future.  Edwards would provide a decent stopgap while a youngster developed, while Brohm would probably be the odd man out.  The Bills hold the ninth overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, but there may be no quarterback to be found at that juncture.

Oklahoma's Sam Bradford is considered by most scouts and draft experts to be the best signal caller in this draft class.  He could go first overall to the Rams and is unlikely to slide past the Redskins at number four.  Still, one never knows what could happen on draft day, and the Bills would have to consider Bradford should he slip to nine.  Bradford spent nearly all of last season sidelined with a shoulder injury that he sustained in OU's first game and reinjured later in the year.  Many people attributed the severity of the injury to Bradford's slight frame.  Playing behind a subpar offensive line in Buffalo would run the serious risk of getting Bradford hurt.  Bradford has bulked up considerably since his injury, but would that be enough to convince the Bills he's worth taking a risk on?

A better option for Buffalo could be Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen.  Clausen is not rated as highly as Bradford on most draft boards, but he played in a pro-style system under Charlie Weis at ND and has shown considerable toughness on the field.  His flashy demeanor might not go over well with Buffalo fans, but he could be the kind of guy who takes over the reins toward the end of his rookie season.  There's a good chance that he's also gone before the Bills pick, though, so the team will have to take a good look at the rest of the quarterback crop.

Many people in Buffalo believe that the answer to the Bills' quarterback issues lies with Tim Tebow.  Jim Kelly himself has proclaimed that Tebow will be a great quarterback and has encouraged the team to draft the former Heisman Trophy winner.  There are some serious questions about Tebow's ability to make the transition to the pro game, but his character and work ethic would make him an instant hit in Buffalo.  To ensure they landed Tebow, the organization would likely have to spend their second-round pick on him, which is a high price to pay for a quarterback that is working on seriously altering his mechanics.  Plus, the consensus opinion on Tebow is that he's a work in progress and will probably need several years to develop into a starting-caliber player, which wouldn't exactly fit into the team's plans.

The Bills should target a signal caller in the draft, but it would be wise for them to take a shot on a late-round guy such as Dan LeFevour as opposed to taking one early on because they've got more pressing needs to address.  No quarterback will be able to play well behind the offensive line they've got there now, so their first-round selection should be spent on an offensive lineman, whether Trent Williams, Russell Okung or another top prospect.  They've got to bake the cake before they can put the icing on it, but it wouldn't be a bad idea to purchase the icing ahead of time.
