Super Bowl Sunday A Success!

If there is one thing that unites Americans, it is sports. Amidst a country of political divisions, diversity of opinions and backgrounds, where there always seems to be some altercation engrossing the public, and often dividing the public, we can always count on sports to make people forget their woes and unite around the common love of the game (minus the team rivalries, but that is more often than not a good natured division).  Last night we saw America’s love for sports at it’s finest, with the excitement surrounding the 44th annual super bowl.

Football fans, who have spent the past months glued to their televisions, thanks to the wonders of satellite TV and the NFL Sunday Ticket, think of the super bowl as the best holiday of the year. For many, super bowl Sunday is better than Christmas, and yesterday’s super bowl was definitely not a letdown. The New Orleans Saints and the Indianapolis Colts battled in what was a fairly even match. Rarely do the top two teams get the opportunity to duel it out in the super bowl.  But, this super bowl was about more than just football and a great game; it was about New Orleans. New Orleans, a city devastated by Hurricane Katrina only four and a half years ago, was finally put in the spotlight again, and America was exposed to a city that is quickly being revived, and whose citizens have more pride and passion for their rich culture, excitement, and energy.

Although I do like sports, and I love watching the super bowl, I was more entertained and excited by the footage I saw of New Orleans. The last time, I saw extensive converge of the city of New Orleans, it consisted of people crying, houses that had been demolished, and the Superdome, home field to the Saints, converted into a massive shelter for thousands of displaced residents.

To see the residents of New Orleans doing what they do best, which is celebrating, was enlightening! And to see it on a high definition television was even more exciting! The energy pulsating through New Orleans seemed to be pulsating right through the TV screen, due primarily to the incredibly realistic quality that HD provides, but also to the contagious and charming excitement of the New Orleans residents.

Strangers danced in the street and passionately embraced one another, while cheering “Who dat?” and singing “When the saints go marching in.” New Orleans deserves the positive attention and excitement it is receiving right now. Not only are the New Orleans Saints Super bowl Champs, Mardi Gras is only a week away, which means this city is in for some much deserved fun in the next few weeks.

Yesterday’s Super bowl united Americans around their love for sports; the match was undeniably an exciting and great game. The game also exposed the nation to the positive energy and excitement pulsating through New Orleans. So many great things from the comfort of the living room, thanks to high definition television.
