Scent-lok versus Scent Blocker: Whats the deal?

I'm new to bow-hunting. I'm used to tree stand hunting with a .270 and it didn't matter about scent. I've killed many deer wearing regular camo. This is my first year bow-hunting. I'm going to be in a ground blind on Oct 1st. Whats the deal with scent technology? Is it that big of a deal in bow-hunting? If so which is the better brand? I've been looking at some Scent Lock "Savanna EXT."

If it is a major part of bow-hunting how did guys like Ben Pearson and Fred Bear kill so many just wearing a flannel jacket?

There are people who need more then a scent lock/blocker. My teenage son after a track meet for example. I have hunted for years without the aid of such products and used natural stuff from whatever is around me at the time to help conceal my presence. I do hunt in very heavily trafficed areas though so human scent is just about everywhere. It is also common for peta freaks to roam the area I am in the day before hunting and they pee everywhere. This actually helps me as it keeps the deer on the side trails.

As for the scent products, covers or blockers, the idea of them is to prevent your scent from being found by the deer or coyote. Now if your blind is more then an hours walk from your car, forget using the products that block your scent as you will have sweated enough in the hike to your blind to make more human scent. You can apply them after you have arrived to your blind but your scent is still there unless you can take another shower. Now the cover scents are only effective if the scent your using naturally occours in the area you are hunting and if it naturally occurs there why by a product when you can just rub whats there on you. Sage for example is all around my deer blind so I just break off a few leaves rub my hands boots pants and that is really all I have ever done.

I am sure that Fred Bear did not use those products they came around way after he died. As a naturalist he more then likely did as I do and spent a great deal of time prescouting and planning before the actual hunt, that is the real key to success.
