Why won't Firefox keep me signed in to websites even when I click remember me or auto login?

On websites such as facebook, rapidshare, yahoo answers etc. there are checkboxes for remaining logged in at all times/leaving you logged in for 2 weeks etc. When I tick these boxes, my firefox seems not to take any notice and, although it remembers my username/password in some cases it never logs me in automatically. Any suggestions?

When you tick the boxes to stay logged in between sessions, it's the responsibility of that particular site (such as Yahoo!, RapidShare, FaceBook, etc.), and not of FireFox, to establish a cookie (a text file) on your system with your login info in encrypted form. Next time you log on, the site checks its cookie and logs you in automatically.

If the sites don't seem to remember you, it may be that you have disabled cookie storage or told FireFox to clear them each time you close the browser. To change this, go to Tools>Options...>Privacy; then check "Accept cookies from sites"; under "Keep until", choose "they expire". Also uncheck "Always clear my private data..." or in its Settings, uncheck Cookies.

FF will remember your login details in its own options, and not through those check boxes. To tell FF to remember passwords, go to Tools>Options...>Security. Check "Remember passwords for sites". Click Exceptions... and remove those sites from this box for which you want the passwords to be stored.

Now close FF and Open it again. Try logging in to some sites. FF will present an option to save the password for a site as soon as you enter this info in the login boxes of the site. Click Yes, and you're done.

(Note that FF will still not offer to remember passwords for secure sites - those pages whose URL's begin with https://)
